THAT SPOT PAGE 8

This is page eight of Jack London's humorous short story That Spot, written by Antonella and drawn by me...

Antonella didn't specify in the script how Spot was supposed to have freed himself from the tree. I surmised that he must have stunned a passing beaver.

THAT SPOT PAGE 6

This is page six of our take on Jack London's humorous short story That Spot, written by Antonella and drawn by me...

This page took ages to draw, but I loved doing all the different characters in the bottom frame. The most difficult part, surprisingly, was drawing the lettering on the leaves of the calendar. I only had Photoshop 4.0 at the time, which has a transform function for distorting type, but it's a bit limited. I have a more advanced version of Photoshop now and stripping in the lettering would have been a doddle, but I think in this case I like the way it turned out, and given a choice, I think I would still have chosen to draw the lettering by hand.

THAT SPOT PAGE 4

Here's page four of That Spot, written by Antonella and drawn by me, based on a short story by Jack London...

This is the first page I'm really happy with (it always takes me a couple of pages to 'settle down' when I'm drawing a strip). The men are starting to look right and I'm getting the hang of the dog. I gradually made the two men scruffier and dirtier as the strip progressed, giving the impression I hope of them having spent years in the outback in locations with no proper bathing facilities.

The main problem I had with this strip was finding the best way to portray the dog's character. He's a chancer, a criminal type who exploits all around him and has nothing but contempt for everyone but himself. A sociopath who feels no connection with society, and has found that he can do whatever he likes because nobody can beat him. In the end I got the 'mood' of the character by channelling a bully who made mine and others' lives miserable at my school. He didn't have a facial scar (although he did smoke), but the contemptuous expression I've given the dog belongs to him. Congratulations mate, you've been immortalised as a dog.

THAT SPOT PAGE 1

...and here, as promised, with only a light delay due to my not being able to find the relevant files on either of our computers or any of our large collection of backup disks, is the Team Sputnik version of That Spot, based on a story by Jack London, written by Antonella, drawn by Nick, first published in Graphic Classics vol. 5, 2nd edition...

...don't worry, it gets better!
